Number and Place Value to 20

The children will soon need to begin to understand what each digits value is in a 2 digit number. This is the beginning of that process! A 2 digit number is 'exactly what it says on the tin'... a number with 2 digits (numbers 10 and beyond). You can reinforce this by showing 2 different numbers (a number between 0-9 and a number between 10 and 20). Ask your child to pick out the 2 digit number. They don't need to be able to recognise the numbers at this stage, they will be able to spot the 2 digit number by noticing that it has 2 numbers as opposed to 1.


Allow plenty of opportunities for your child to count to 20. Count the number of stairs as you go up and down, count to 20 when playing a game of hide and seek, complete a time challenge... how many jumps/hops/claps can you do in the time it takes to count to 20 etc. Count together and make it fun!


Present your child with a number to 20, can they find/count out a number of objects to match that number? You can use pasta, coins, raisins, cars, pencils, lego blocks etc. 


Making it Simple!

If your child is finding this challenging start with numbers to 5 or 10. Practise counting using the ideas suggested above and allow plenty of opportunity for your child to count out numbers of objects to match each number/digit. Your child needs to become familiar with how numbers can be represented, including how they look in written form. 

Try playing a game of skittles. How many skittles did you/they knock down? Encourage your child to count! Can they show you the number that matches?


Using blocks or lego, make a staircase to show counting to 20. Reinforce to your child that when counting, each number is 1 more than the number before. Again if your child isn't quite ready you can do this for numbers to 5 and 10.




When you get to 11, 12 etc use 2 different colours. In this example I have used blue to make 10 then red to add 1 more to make 11. Reinforce that 10 and 1 more makes 11. Repeat for the number 12 (10 and 2 more makes 12). You could always lay out other objects to create towers in the same way if you are unable to use lego or blocks. You could use 10 raisins and 1 pasta, you could use 2 different types of sweets etc whatever engages your child!


Challenge Yourself/Key Questions!

  • Spot the mistake!



  • Count out a number of objects yourself. Ask your child 'How many do I have?' Make the number which is 1 more/1 less than mine.
  • Can your child use objects to show what 2 numbers would make 21, 22, 23 etc? using the same idea as above. 
  • Record each number as a number sentence so for e.g. 11 = 10 + 1, 10 + 1 = 11.
