The purpose of this phase is to consolidate the children’s ability to read and spell words with the learnt sounds and to teach them to spell words with adjacent consonants/words with consonant clusters at the beginning or at the end of a word (for e.g. flap, pram, stamp etc) and polysyllabic words (words with more than 1 syllable, e.g. computer). The children will practise reading and spelling CVCC words (for e.g. ‘such,’ ‘belt,’ ‘milk’ etc) and CCVC words (for e.g. ‘stop’, ‘chat’, ‘float’ etc). They will practise reading and spelling high frequency words and will continue to learn more tricky words.
