This Phase introduces the children to the remaining 25 phonemes or sounds. Most of these sounds are made up of 2 letters (diagraphs) but some are made up of 3 letters (trigraphs).
Set 6: j v w x
Set 7: y z, zz qu
The remaining sounds are taught in the following order:
sh, ch, th, ng
ai, ee, igh, oa
oo, ar, or, er
ow, oi, ear, air
In Phase 3, the children learn the names of the letters as well as the sounds they make, so practise singing the alphabet. The children are introduced to more high frequency words and will also begin to learn to spell them.
High Frequency words (Reading only)
High Frequency words (for spelling)
The children will continue to practise blending and segmenting CVC words but in this phase the ‘V’ or vowel in a CVC word will consist of more than 1 letter for e.g. r ai n = rain. When drawing sound buttons to model the segmentation and blending of words in this Phase, we use a dot to show where 1 letter makes 1 sound and a line to represent any diagraphs (2 letters that come together to make 1 sound).
